I was preparing for a coaching session for young healers when I was struck by a seemingly vane but fundamentally profound flash on TV. It was a feature on the legendary Samurai Warriors. I tried not to pay attention but was soon drawn in, as the intensity portrayed was incredibly startling. What was even more startling was that they were the maestros of war on one end, and students of soul at other. I started thinking of how the control of the mind can lead to a great intensity in spirit. I thought how a holistic balance of the mind and spirit could create unbound prowess.
But, how to initiate this ecstatic alliance in a world of deviants?
Motivation was the answer. Everybody has his own motivation. The fact remains that behind all our thoughts and consequential actions, there is a motive. Our being is unconsciously conditioned to work only on motive. Motivation can originate from many sources but it’s always accompanied by an intellectual principle, a philosophy of eventuality, of attainment. Likewise, yoga asks one to have every mental faculty and fibre of muscle in one’s body working in unison, with one philosophy and one purpose.
So, was this the basis of their intensity – the same source that the Maharishis were preoccupied with? Now that the motivation leading to the intensity of body and spirit was getting clearer, I questioned myself about the converse – so, what is it that limits us, the ‘ordinary’ people, from this motivation?
Answer – INGNORANCE OF THE TRUE SELF.
For us, Awareness of Self is the idea that we exist separately from the rest of creation. Awareness of self in the sense of I am black, white, man, woman, able, incompetent, unfortunate – and not in the sense of the compassion and liberated power that we are all capable of exhibiting.
To overcome this False Awareness, there must be appreciation of the beauty of the inner self, of an internal sense of satisfaction as opposed to an external compulsion for praise. Ideally, there is also an internal existence that is above the need for approval from external sources. Our actions and inactions, when in realization of this free and joyous self, not only improve our mind, but also are in harmony with our aura. Awareness and focus are needed to overcome our biggest enemy – our inner sense of fear and insecurity – and to realize the Power of the Self- the awakening of the soul!
The day we realize this is the day we begin our journey; the exploration of the joy of life. Our bodies must be strong and our minds unwavering, but we don’t have to detach ourselves from the world. We have to get holistic vision and be open to who gives it to us. Maybe that clarity comes from our own subconscious when all the tools of knowledge have been accumulated, and the spirit is ready; the mind is attuned to the oneness of being and the body ready to be healed.
Once the body and the subconscious working together have transcended a particular plane, the self is ready to heal from the injuries inflicted on it by us though undue worries and loss of hope.
It’s when we are able to see the beauty in a child’s eyes as he asks a question, or a baby deep in slumber clutching her mother, that we return to a state of innocence and purity. This state — where one is not circumscribed by the Self and yet lives within the Self – is when we realize that the path must lie in submitting completely, and to love and respect who we are and what we can do.
